DR GOLF comes to town!

Think golf and what comes to mind would be well-toned, perfectly tanned and lean players in their designer golf apparrel. Having worked their way across almost 5 kms of golf terrain, you can bet they are as fit as a fiddle.

The truth is not all golfers are fit. In fact,  a large majority of them are as unfit or more so than the rest of the non-golfing population. How can that be so?

During a game, avid golfers contort their bodies into oddly twisted postures, generating a great deal of torque (rotation). Couple this motion with a bent-over stance repeated 12 times over three or four hours, add the fatigue that comes with several miles of walking and you’ve got a good workout- as well as a recipe for potential injury.

Not only that, many golfers choose to ride on a buggy instead of walk, which eliminates a large part of the exercise element.

“Being unfit puts them at risk of back and spine injuries such as sprains, tennis elbow, pulled muscles at the calves or Archilles tendon, ligament tears and muscle wear and tear. Some even develop a slipped disc from playing golf,” says Dato’ Dr Anuar Bin Onah, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Sime Darby Medical Centre Ara Damansara who sub-specialises in sports injuries.

The keen golfer adds that golf should be regarded as any other sport where players need to be sufficiently fit to play. That was how Dr Golf was born.

Healthcare has evolved into an entirely new concept in Malaysia with greater emphasis on service and clinical excellence, said Edgar Toral, Director of Business Development & Planning for Sime Darby Healthcare during the official launch of Dr Golf on 4 October 2012 at Sime Darby Medical Centre Ara Damansara.

He describes Dr Golf as the first wellness programme offering a holistic approach for the physical wellbeing of golfers, starting with their partners MST Golf and the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC).

The concept is simple: a team of professionals offers consultation and medical services to golfers to help them stay in good physical condition before they begin playing . Being fit not only prevents injuries but also improves their game.

Where necessary, the Dr Golf team will assist and refer the golfer to nutritionists, physiotherapists, cardiologists or other specialists according to their needs.

Dr Golf packages begins at RM388 for a Basic Wellness Golfer’s Package that includes a comprehensive medical report, screening profile, physical examination and consultation by an Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon.

Golfers can upgrade to the Wellness & Nutritional Screening Package with just an additional RM50 to include nutritional advice. Other packages include the Comprehensive Wellness for Golfers Package (RM888) which includes lower/upper limb, neck & back exercises, the Premium Wellness Golfers Package (RM1,288) which includes a hydrotherapy exercise programme and the Elite Heart Package (RM1,888) which is an extension of the Comprehensive Package.

Paul Gibbons, Group Marketing Director of MST Golf who was also present at the launch said,”We are very excited to collaborate with Sime Darby Healthcare because the biggest complaint among golf instructors is how unfit golf players are. The facilities under Sime Darby Healthcare are impressive and I’m sure the members of ‘ilovegolf’, our loyalty card programme with over 40,000 members will agree. We’ll also be promoting this through MST Golf Academy for students who require medical care.”
