The Colour of Healing

Using colour therapy to enhance your personal life and improve business success

We are surrounded by colour, and without it, life simply would not be as interesting or as vivid. However, as colour is so familiar to us, we often taken it for granted; rarely stopping to think about the effect that it has on our lives and moods. Unbeknownst to many of us, colour quickly becomes part of the substance of our lives from the moment we are born. Colour even has a practical bearing on our personal relationships, home and working environment, as well as everything that we eat, drink and touch.

Though we may not always be very aware of the effect that colour has on our emotions, we often speak of our feelings in terms of colours. For example, we may say that we are having the “blues” when we mean we’re sad or depressed and that someone is seeing “red” when we mean that they’re angry or a friend is getting a “golden” opportunity when we mean he or she has received a wonderful opportunity. Therefore,it stands to reason that if we enhance our awareness of the power of colour and how it can affect our lives, moods, emotions and even performance, we can learn to use colour to make positive changes in our lives.

Evelyn Leong is a certified colour therapist from TheSchoolofNaturalHealthSciences,UK. She began practicing colour therapy in 2011 and is the founderof Colourzwork. Evelyn explains the role of colour and how it can help us manage stress and improve our lives.

What Is Colour Therapy?Print

Beyond its practical applications in making our world more aesthetically pleasing, colour can also be used for curative purposes. According to Evelyn, “Colour therapy is a natural system of healing using the therapeutic energy within the spectrum of colours to bring balance to the body, mind and spirit.” The role of colour therapy, she explains, is to help people understand their need for certain colours, and advise them how to use these colours for healing, health, relaxation and creative inspiration, either for their career or personal development.

A colour therapist, like Evelyn, is trained in applying light and colour in the form of tools, visualisations or verbal suggestions to balance energy in the areas of our bodies that are lacking vibrance, be it physical, emotional, spiritual or mental. There are many ways in which this “energy” can become blocked, and we usually unknowingly cause these blockages ourselves due to our poor diet, lifestyle, negative thoughts and emotional suppression. “External contributors, such as sound and air pollution, as well as stress, can also disrupt this energy,” says Evelyn.

Clogged Energy And Stress Management

Though colour therapy may sound like a newfangled remedy to some, it is anything but that. Colour therapy has a very long history with roots in ancient civilisations like Egypt, India and China. Throughout history, numerous renowned scholars and physicians have written about it, from Aristotle, Pythagoras and Hippocrates, to the 10th century Persian polymath Avicenna; the 17th century English mathematician and physicist Sir Isaac Newton; as well as the 19th century American scientist Edwin Babbitt.

Today, colour therapy continues to be studied and applied extensively in Asia, Europe and America as a complementary treatment for many physical, emotional and mental problems. Evelyn notes that healing with light and colour is also a fast-developing area of scientific study with many medical, health and beauty applications. “The main health benefit of colour therapy, however,” she explains, “Is in stress management.” She goes on to explain that daily stresses often build up within our systems and cause clogged energy, which will initially disrupt the balance of our minds, bodies and spirit and eventually lead to manifestations of physical illness such as a sore throat, flu and cough.

Healing With Colour

But this begs the question, how does colour “heal” exactly? Well, firstly, as Evelyn often points out to her clients, we must appreciate that “Colour and life are inseparable,” and secondly, we should understand what she refers to as “The chakra system.” Throughout our bodies, Evelyn explains, there are main energy centers that are linked to major organs or glands that govern other body parts. “Each main organ or gland is governed by a chakra (Sanskrit for wheel), which is then connected to other body parts that resonate the same frequency,” she details.
Aligned along our spinal columns, she continues, are seven main chakra centres, which are associated with our physical health and controls aspects connected to our emotional, mental and belief systems. If there are disturbances on any level, this impacts our chakras’ vitality levels. “Blockages to the chakras cause parts of our aura to vibrate to the wrong colour frequency,” Evelyn warns, “ If the causes of this imbalance are not found and rectified, as a result we fall out of sync and become ill.” She also notes that “To help balance a chakra, whether on an emotional, intellectual, physical or spiritual level, we need to bring in the chakra (colour) vibration, which resonates at the same frequency.”

With so many people encountering various causes of stress in their daily lives these days, who usually seeks colour therapy in Malaysia? Evelyn reveals that most who come to her for treatment are professionals working in stressful environments, as well as those who are going through grief and are recovering from a loss or a broken relationship. “Many also seek colour therapy as an alternative treatment for their depression, insomnia, addictions, lower back problems and migraine,” she adds. Evelyn also remarks that besides adults, children stand to benefit from colour therapy as they are very receptive towards colour vibrations.

Promoting Personal Growth And Business Success

Still have doubts about colour therapy? Well, the best thing about it is, that it is safe, easy to apply and non-invasive. Based on her years of experience as a colour therapist, Evelyn assures that, “Once you get to know colour and discover what it can do for you and how it can change your life, it will be much easier for you to promote personal growth, self esteem, business and career success, creative inspiration, release stress, re-build health and release your creative energy.”

Furthermore, once you’ve undergone colour therapy sessions with a professional like Evelyn, you will be able to apply the practical remedies of colour therapy for yourself on a day to day basis. Offering words of advice to anyone out there who is keen on trying colour therapy, Evelyn says, “Be open and trust the healing power of colour vibrations.”
