Many breast cancer survivors often suffer from persistent fatigue. This condition may be caused by one part of the autonomic nervous system running in overdrive, while the other part failing to slow it down. That imbalance may speed up ageing. In the study, 109 women participated and were divided into two groups: those who reported long-term fatigue and those who didn’t. They were put through various mental tests. Regardless of the type of stressor, women who had persistent fatigue showed higher levels of stress hormones than those who weren’t fatigued. This Ohio State University finding was reported in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology.
