Can eating according to your blood type have a positive impact on your health?

Naturopathy is a profession that combines modern science with traditional healing methods. Certified naturopath, and New York Times best-selling author of Eat Right 4 Your Type, Dr. Peter J D’Adamo says that a “one size fits all” nutritional diet is not the best way to stay healthy and to protect yourself from diseases.

Based on his research and expertise, Dr. D’Adamo has introduced a concept of eating certain types of food, according to your blood type. On his official website (, he reveals several fundamentals he uses as a basis for his theory. One of these is that your blood type may be used to predict your body’s susceptibility towards certain types of diseases. For example, research has found that people with type O blood have a higher risk of developing stomach ulcers but a lower risk of developing heart diseases.

Another fundamental behind the concept of eating according to your blood type is that the type of bacteria in your intestines could be linked to your blood type. For example, people with type A blood have the ability to breakdown carbohydrates more efficiently than those who have type O blood.

Eating according to your blood type is also a possible method of weight management. So, which blood type are you? Here is Dr. D’Adamo’s list of foods you should eat based on your blood type.

Blood Type A

People who are type A, have a more sensitive immune system so high amounts of fruits and vegetables is best. A diet based on fruits, vegetables, beans (such as broad beans and kidney beans), legumes (such as peas and lentils) and whole-grains is recommended.

Blood Type B

Corn, buckwheat, lentils and tomatoes are some of the types of food that slow down the metabolic process among type Bs. When they are consumed, you will feel tired and could possibly experience fluid retention. Type Bs should focus on foods like green vegetables, eggs and low fat dairy. The intake of chicken in a type B’s diet should be limited because it contains agglutinating lectins. Lectins are proteins which are commonly found in food with high nutritional value such as seafood and grains. Agglutinating lectins are proteins from food which tend to interact with oligosaccharide (sugar) residues and bind together with them. This can affect your blood and possibly leading to immune disorders such as Myasthenia Gravis (a neuromuscular disease which leads to muscle weakness).


Blood Type AB

Caffeine and alcohol should be avoided if you are type AB. People with blood type AB tend to have low levels of stomach acid. Having enough stomach acid is important for good digestion and your overall immune health. People with type AB should go for a diet that includes plenty of seafood, dairy, green vegetables and tofu.


Blood Type O

People with blood type O tend to be more susceptible to certain illnesses such as ulcers and thyroid disorders. This blood type is known to easily digest both protein and fat. A diet rich in protein such as lean meat, fish, vegetables and dairy is recommended.

Lean meat

Besides adhering to a strict diet, regular exercise is also encouraged. Here are the types of exercise you should aim for, according to your blood type:

Blood Type A

  • Vigorous exercises such as aerobics, running and hiking

Blood Type B

  • Gentle exercises such as walking, dancing and swimming

Blood Type AB

  • Moderate exercises such as walking briskly and cycling slowly

Blood Type O

  • Calming exercises such as yoga


  • It encourages you to avoid processed foods and simple carbohydrates
  • It encourages all blood types to exercise
  • It encourages limiting sugar and alcohol in your diet


  • There is insufficient medical research to support the effectiveness of this diet
  • When followed strictly, this diet may be too low in certain types of nutrients
  • It may not be ideal for a person with a medical condition
