Your eyes are often the first thing people notice about you. They are also the key focal point of attention which requires a lot of care to preserve their beauty.
“When someone talks to you, they are usually looking at you in the eye,” says Dr Heng Kien Seng, a plastic surgeon and founder of Nicarnor Cosmetic Surgery. “Wrinkles, puffy eyes and dark circles can make us look much older than we are. This is one of the main reasons why many opt for cosmetic eye surgery.”
Most procedures or surgeries are done on an outpatient basis involving light sedation, hence most patients can get back to their daily routine by the next day, he points out. After-care mainly involves avoiding excessive sunlight and protecting the eyes from external trauma while healing is taking place within the first week.
Dr Heng provides Urban Health a list of the top five cosmetic eye surgeries and treatments:
1. Double eyelid surgery
Most people undergo double eyelid surgery for beauty purposes, but this procedure is also popular amongst older people whose vision is disrupted when the skin from their upper eyelid sags to forms a hood as a result of ageing.
During the one-hour procedure, the surgeon removes excess skin and fats and tucks it in to create a fold, forming the double eyelids. The procedure can be personalised according to your preferences or celebrity eyes, but Dr Heng’s advice is “Don’t overdo it, or it won’t look natural!”
Cost: RM3,500 – RM4,000
2. Eye bag removal
Eye bags refer to the swelling of the tissues around the eyes. They are commonly caused by the thinning of the skin that will reveal the existing fats and muscle around the eye. Factors such as lack of sleep, tobacco, alcohol and ageing contribute to the appearance of eye bags.
An eye bag removal surgery can reduce the puffiness and dark circles, making you look younger, refreshed and alert.
The surgery involves the removal of excess fat from the lower eyelid to reinforce the surrounding muscles and tendons around the transconjuctival and rejuvenate the skin. It can be done through the outer or inner eyelid, depending on your surgeon’s recommendation. Scarring is zero if the surgery is done through the inner eyelid.
3. Botox and Fillers
Botox and fillers are among the fastest and most popular cosmetic eye procedures that makes your eye area look different instantly.
Botox helps to reduce wrinkled areas at the eyes, forehead and cheeks as a result of facial movement. The effects last approximately 6 months, depending on a person’s lifestyle.
Cost: RM600-RM1800 per area (eg. Forehead is one area, eyes are another area)
Fillers work wonders on dark circles, filling up hollow spaces surrounding the eye as a result of ageing, lack of sleep, stress and other factors. The effects last about six to nine months and regular top-ups are necessary to maintain a youthful appearance.
Cost: RM 1200- RM1300 per syringe
4. Brow Lift/Forehead Lift
Brow Lift or Forehead Lift helps to restore youthful features by reducing skin folds and sagging skin at the brows. The procedure involves making incisions around the eye brow area, lifting the brow and upper eye lid and tightening them up to reduce wrinkles and pull up sagging skin.
This procedure is recommended especially for drooping eye lids in the elderly, which in severe cases may disrupt vision.
Cost: RM3,000-RM3,500 for a brow lift and RM3,500-RM4,000 for a forehead lift.
A unique feature to Asian eyelids is the epicanthic folds, the skin fold at the inner corner of your eye that gives a characteristic slit. Epicanthoplasty is a procedure that involves the removal of epicanthal folds to make the eyes appear bigger.
The procedure takes less than an hour, where the surgeon shortens the ligament at the corner of the eye to widen eye and then re-drape the excess skin around the inner corner of the eye. There may be some scarring following surgery but they are mainly hidden within the natural folds of the under-eye.
Cost: RM2,000 – RM2,500
